Whilst staying in Beijing, I began exploring the art of Chinese calligraphy; coming across one of my favourite Chinese artists - Wu Guan Zhong - known for being one of the founders of modern Chinese art with his contemporary and intercultural style. I was drawn to the unconventional style of his Chinese paintings, heavily influenced by his European education during the 1940's.
This piece Jiang Nan shows the merging of Chinese and western techniques; by the use of oil painting to portray the traditional brush strokes of Chinese calligraphy (as shown from my partnering piece below).

Structural Dream |
|
During the Easter break before my High School graduation, I began preparing for an exhibition in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, titled - Vibrant & Collective Memory. For my main piece I decided to create something that would play with the structure of the painting itself - a piece that could be viewed from countless arrangements.
These four separate canvases come together in 8 different placements all showing a street of colourful comic-styled houses. The energetic colour combination along with the cartoon-y style gives it a dream-like feel - Structural Dream. Acrylic on Canvas 92cm x 30cm 2012 |

FANtastic Love |
|
A piece to express my feelings of encouragement towards a friend's loss of her late mother; the dull yet multi-coloured hearts are a symbol for the emotions of loss I feel towards my dear friend. The leaking and dripping of the paint is a technique I enjoy using, the unfamiliar and unknown results of letting the paint drip freely intrigues me greatly. In that same year, this piece was a part of a Therapeutic Arts Exhibition for Children at Hong Kong's Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre.

Tears |

Emotions is a very hard thing to define, with words we appear to always end up with a tautology of sorts... therefore I believe it is only through arts that we can truly express these feelings and emotions. By using simply one shade of colour I am able to portray the depth of sensations felt in the loss of a loved one...

erosion |
|
One of the main pieces of my GCSE project (2008-10); it depicts the relationship between nature and man-made objects, the strength of nature being able to penetrate through anything in its path. The ‘Erosion of Nature’, nibbling its way into the building, the roots climbing its way up the wall and into the home. The top part is painted in water colour; the bottom half, a mixture of different materials such as woollen strings, tissue paper, chalk, water colour, graphite and white emulsion paint. The rips and tears emphasise the power of nature, silently creeping into our modern urban society.
